I miss Barb on Cougar Town, fortunately, she’ll be on True Blood this summer!
Political beliefs aside, I respect Sarah Palin for having the courage to accept a challenge that was far beyond her reach. And if possible, Julianne Moore’s performance in Game Change made me admire Palin more. Why?—Because Moore showed all shades of Palin without parody.
There’s a scene in the movie where Moore’s Palin is watching Tina Fey (hilariously) mock her on SNL. For a moment you forget that you’re watching an actress portray Palin, and instead find yourself sympathizing with the real Sarah Palin, who was humiliated. Granted Palin might not have been properly prepared, but she is still a human being with feelings.
The film also delves into the puppetry born out of desperation that becomes of Palin. She wasn’t properly vetted. She wasn’t prepared. She was overwhelmed. She was tossed into the national spotlight without a clue how to be in it. She was isolated from her family. She was isolated from McCain. She was on the brink of a nervous breakdown. She was used as a game piece. Combine all that with her small-town charm and you have a political celebrity, a star.
That said, I truly enjoyed the film and Moore’s raw, fearless performance. It explained the workings of a political campaign, yes. I showed the impact Palin had on the republican party, yes. It even showed how McCain didn’t know his own running mate. But more importantly Game Change underlined the candid molding of an inspirational, history-making, controversial political figure.
So. Fucking. Excited.
